FT96 - Vintage folktoy Koma Spining Top
A vintage Japanese folktoy. This is a traditional Japanese wooden spinning top, known as a koma (独楽 or こま). Koma have been a beloved folk toy in Japan for centuries, often used in games, New Year's celebrations, and as decorative or lucky items. Made of wood, with a smooth, rounded body that allows for stable spinning. Features a metal or wooden tip at the bottom, which acts as the pivot point for spinning. The topmost part is slightly pointed, it is a hand-thrown top rather than a string-pulled one.
Decorated with concentric rings of red, green, yellow, and black, which are common colors in traditional Edo-style koma. The paint is applied in a symmetrical, layered manner, creating a visually striking effect when spun. The metal tip suggests it is designed for a longer spin and possibly competitive play. In Japan, koma are commonly played with during Oshogatsu (New Year celebrations) as they symbolize good fortune and perseverance. Some koma were historically used in battles, where players would try to knock their opponent's top out of a spinning area. This koma’s craftsmanship and traditional painting make it a classic Japanese omiyage (souvenir), likely from a craft region known for wooden toys.
