FT134 - Hand crafted stone Daruma Doll 那智黒石

FT134 - Hand crafted stone Daruma Doll 那智黒石

This Daruma doll is carved from Nachiguro-ishi (那智黒石), a naturally dark and fine-grained stone sourced from the Nachi area in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. Known for its deep, lustrous black surface when polished, Nachiguro-ishi has long been used in traditional crafts, particularly inkstones, and carries a sense of quiet strength and refinement.

The doll itself takes the familiar, rounded shape of the traditional Daruma, a symbol of perseverance and unwavering determination in Japanese culture. What sets this piece apart is the contrast in texture and tone created by the stone's treatment. The upper portion of the figure, particularly the face, has been meticulously polished to a high sheen, revealing the jet-black beauty of the Nachiguro stone. In this darkened surface, a solemn face is carved with sharp, deliberate lines—eyes wide and piercing, a downturned mouth, and etched details that suggest both age and wisdom.

In contrast, the lower part of the doll is left in a more natural, unpolished state, retaining the raw texture of the stone. This dual finish not only highlights the craftsmanship but also speaks to the Daruma’s symbolic meaning: the polished clarity of inner purpose rising from the rough persistence of effort and resilience.

In Shinto, Japan's indigenous spirituality, stones are often considered sacred objects (yorishiro) that can house kami (deities or spirits).
