Byodoin Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Uji, Kyoto, is famous for its Phoenix Hall (Hōō-dō), an architectural masterpiece symbolizing paradise and eternal peace. The Tsuko-Tegata from Byodoin often features intricate calligraphy, temple seals (goshuin), and images of the Phoenix, reflecting the temple’s deep Buddhist heritage and connection to good fortune and enlightenment.
Tsuko-Tegata is a kind of wooden passport that was used in the Edo Period as an identity card for travelers when passing from region to region. They had been sold a lot in Showa period as mingei type souvenirs all over Japan. It's also a protector for safety and peace for family.
