FT67 - Japanese Folktoy Daikokuten 大黒天
A vintage toy figure Daikokuten (大黒天) from 出雲大社 (Izumo Taisha) is one of Japan’s most ancient and significant Shinto shrines, located in Shimane Prefecture. It is dedicated to Ōkuninushi no Mikoto, the deity of marriage, good relationships, and fortune. The shrine is renowned for its grand torii gates, massive shimenawa (sacred rope), and rich mythology. According to legend, Izumo Taisha is where all the gods of Japan gather annually for a divine assembly.
He one of Japan’s Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin, 七福神) and the deity of wealth, prosperity, and good fortune. He seated atop symbolic straw rice bales (komedawara), signifying abundance and prosperity. His joyful expression, plump cheeks, and relaxed posture exude warmth and good fortune. He holds a golden mallet (uchide no kozuchi, 打ち出の小槌), a magical hammer said to grant wishes and bring wealth when shaken.
This handcrafted folk piece is a wonderful example of Japanese Shinto-Buddhist syncretism, where gods from different traditions merge into a harmonious belief system. It is a perfect collector’s item or a meaningful addition to any space, inviting prosperity, happiness, and good fortune into your home.
