K05068 - Omiyage Kokeshi of Kitahachi 喜多八
This charming vintage omiyage kokeshi depicts Kitahachi (喜多八), he is one of the two famous comic travellers from the Edo-period popular novel Tōkaidōchū Hizakurige (東海道中膝栗毛), written by Jippensha Ikku (十返舎一九). The story follows Kitahachi and his companion Yajirōbei as they travel along the Tōkaidō, the historic road connecting Edo and Kyoto. Their journey is full of humorous mistakes, playful conversations, local encounters, and satirical scenes of everyday life in Edo-period Japan.
The doll has a rounded, compact form with a cheerful hand-painted face, soft black hair, and a bright blue head covering. The body is decorated with colourful kimono-style patterns in green, red, and warm earthy tones, giving it a nostalgic Showa-era charm. The attached round hat or travel accessory at the side further emphasizes Kitahachi’s identity as a travelling character.
As an omiyage kokeshi, this piece combines the simple charm of kokeshi craftsmanship with a famous figure from Japanese popular literature. Its playful expression, hand-painted details, and gentle vintage wear make it a delightful collectible.
