K10138 - Ukiyo-e Kokeshi Aomori 浮世絵と歌舞伎
This sōsaku kokeshi from Aomori Prefecture is part of a special themed collection titled “Pleasure Districts and Kabuki in Ukiyo-e Society” (浮世絵社会の遊里と歌舞伎). Inspired by the vivid world of ukiyo-e, traditional woodblock prints depicting the "floating world" of Edo-period urban life, this doll beautifully channels the elegance and theatricality of kabuki performers and the refined glamour of Japan's historical pleasure quarters.
Expertly turned from wood and left with a warm natural finish, the doll features a finely painted figure in dramatic kabuki attire, with luxurious black robes and ornate sleeves dotted in traditional green, gold, and white patterns. The performer, holding a sheathed sword, strikes a dynamic pose — possibly representing a tachiyaku (male hero role) or a samurai actor mid-performance. The head, shaped in a classic bobble-style with subtle topknot detail, adds a playful and animated touch, typical of sōsaku (creative) interpretations.
This kokeshi original documented from the Japan Kokeshi Appreciation Society (日本こけし趣味の会), with cultural commentary, contextualizing the doll within Edo society’s entertainment culture. A rare and thoughtful piece that merges craftsmanship, historical narrative, and performative art.
