K10238 - Sosaku Kokeshi by Sekiguchi Tōa 関口東亜
This elegant Sōsaku Kokeshi titled Izayoi (十六夜) was created by Sekiguchi Tōa (関口東亜), one of the most accomplished artists of the creative kokeshi movement. Renowned for his refined aesthetic sensibility and emotional depth, Sekiguchi received numerous prestigious honors throughout his career, including the Ministry of International Trade and Industry Award in the late 1970s and later the coveted Prime Minister’s Award, placing him among the foremost masters of postwar kokeshi art.
The title Izayoi refers to the sixteenth night moon, the moon that rises slightly later than the full moon. In Japanese poetry and classical literature, izayoi evokes a mood of quiet longing, lingering beauty, and the gentle passage of time. This poetic theme is beautifully embodied in the doll’s serene expression and contemplative presence.
Unlike traditional kokeshi forms, this piece adopts a rounded, almost orb-like silhouette that emphasizes stillness and harmony. The figure is dressed in an elegant black kimono accented with delicate gold and silver decorative motifs that recall moonlit grasses and flowing seasonal patterns. The subtle metallic highlights shimmer softly against the dark surface, creating a sense of depth and quiet radiance, much like moonlight reflected in the night.
The face is rendered with remarkable restraint—simple closed eyes, a tiny mouth, and a calm upward tilt of the head convey an atmosphere of peaceful introspection. This ability to express emotion through minimal means is one of Sekiguchi Tōa’s defining artistic strengths and can be seen throughout his celebrated works such as Kaze ni Fukarete (“Blown by the Wind”), Utage (“Banquet”), and Chikurin (“Bamboo Grove”).
