K10244 - Omiyage from Azuma Skyline 吾妻スカイライン
This vintage omiyage kokeshi comes from Azuma Skyline (吾妻スカイライン), the scenic mountain road in Fukushima Prefecture known for its beautiful views, volcanic landscape, and seasonal mountain scenery. The piece captures the nostalgic feeling of a journey through the highlands in the form of a small handmade souvenir diorama.
The scene features two tiny kokeshi-style travellers standing together beside a rustic wooden sign marked 吾妻スカイライン. Their heads are gently tilted toward each other, giving the piece a sweet and affectionate feeling. Each figure has a simple hand-painted face, round wooden head, and natural nut-like body, with small painted details in green and red on the front. The use of natural materials, bark, twigs, moss-like decoration, and a thin wood-slice base gives the piece a warm mountain-craft character.
Unlike standard upright kokeshi, this type of omiyage kokeshi was made as a miniature travel scene, combining folk doll elements with local landscape imagery. The handmade signpost and natural wood textures evoke the atmosphere of mountain paths, sightseeing roads, and Showa-era travel souvenirs.
