A distinctive vintage Japanese Nipopo Doll (ニポポ人形) originating from Hokkaido, northern Japan, inspired by the traditional wooden figures of the Indigenous Ainu people.

This beautifully carved wooden figurine features a tall, cylindrical silhouette with a stern yet peaceful expression, deeply carved eyebrows, and a prominent black beard. Its dark-painted robe is decorated with elegant geometric patterns, revealing the natural warmth of the wood beneath.

The combination of bold carving, contrasting colours, and simplified forms gives this piece a striking sculptural presence, reflecting the rustic beauty of northern Japanese folk craftsmanship.

The name Nipopo comes from the Ainu language, meaning "little wooden child" or "wooden doll." Traditionally associated with the Ainu people of Sakhalin, Nipopo figures were regarded as protective charms, believed to bring happiness, fulfil wishes, and offer protection against illness and misfortune.

Nipopo dolls later became a celebrated regional folk craft of Abashiri (網走) in Hokkaido, where wooden versions have been produced as traditional souvenirs, notably through the craftsmanship associated with Abashiri Prison.
