A Togatta-style kokeshi by Kohei Takahashi stands out for its bright energy and clean lines. The doll is adorned with a series of bold, angular floral motifs rendered in striking red, green, and light blue, a signature visual rhythm often seen in Kohei’s work. The head features strong, expressive eyebrows, sharply defined black side hair, and a serene, slightly mischievous smile—typical of Togatta's charming simplicity. Its cylindrical body is neatly framed with red bands at the top and bottom, providing a classic, balanced finish.

Kohei Takahashi (高橋広平, 1928–2006) born on August 25, 1928 in Togatta Onsen, Miyagi Prefecture, Kohei Takahashi was the eldest son of woodcarver Takahashi Rinpei. Originally registered as Takahashi Hirohei, he began handling the potter’s wheel from a young age at Kitaoka Woodworks, under the guidance of his father and the renowned craftsman Sato Hiroki. By the time he finished elementary school in 1943, Kohei was already crafting traditional kokeshi.

After completing studies at the Agriculture and Forestry School in 1946, Kohei worked briefly in other trades before fully returning to woodcraft in 1951. By 1953, he had launched his own workshop producing both traditional and creative-style kokeshi, along with toys. He trained several others, including Sato Kesakichi, and in 1968 installed a potter's wheel at home to focus on older-style kokeshi. He also held leadership roles, such as chairing the Togatta Onsen Kokeshi Association. Kohei continued producing kokeshi and mentoring future artisans—including his own son, Hironori Takahashi—until his death on December 5, 2006, at the age of 79.
