K15078 - Sōsaku Schoolboy Atami City 熱海市

A sōsaku kokeshi from the scenic coastal city of Atami (熱海市) captures the nostalgic innocence of a Japanese schoolboy in traditional student uniform. Nestled along the eastern coast of Japan’s Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture, Atami is a historic seaside resort town famous for its natural hot springs (onsen), picturesque ocean views, and vibrant Showa-era charm. Its name literally means "hot ocean," a reference to the area's volcanic activity and abundance of thermal springs that have attracted visitors since the Edo period.

The doll’s minimalist yet expressive face is framed by neatly painted hair and a modest school cap, complete with a yellow emblem detail. His upright stance and the clean, symmetrical black uniform with a row of bright yellow buttons evoke a sense of order and youthful discipline, a tribute to post-war Showa-era school life.

The figure is carved from natural wood, preserving the grain’s warm texture, with hand-painted features that reflect the personal touch of the artisan. This kokeshi originated as a regional souvenir item, a common practice in spa towns like Atami, where local artists created playful, thematic dolls for visitors to take home as mementos.
