This is a traditional Naruko kokeshi created by Fumihiro Ito (伊藤文博, 1926–), a master craftsman with deep roots in the Naruko kokeshi lineage. This handcrafted doll captures the delicate elegance and expressive charm characteristic of the Naruko tradition, one of the most iconic and enduring kokeshi styles from Miyagi Prefecture.

Fumihiro Ito was born on December 10, 1926, in Akayu, Naruko-cho, into a family of artisans—his parents Bunshiro and Yoshino were also craftspeople. Though his early years saw a brief shift away from woodworking, he returned to the path of traditional craft, beginning his formal apprenticeship under renowned kokeshi maker Sei Onuma in 1945. After several years of dedicated training, he opened his own workshop in 1951 and began creating kokeshi in 1953. Over the decades, he remained a vital presence in the kokeshi-making community of Akayu Sanhachi in Naruko.

This particular doll reflects Fumihiro's refined sensibility: the face is serene and friendly, with softly painted eyes and a gently smiling expression. The body features vibrant chrysanthemum motifs in red, a traditional flower often seen in Naruko kokeshi, symbolizing longevity and seasonal beauty. The soft yet vivid brushwork is balanced and rhythmic, showcasing Ito’s mastery of composition and color.

With no children of his own, Fumihiro adopted his younger brother, Shotoku Ito, as his successor, ensuring the continuation of his craft lineage. His legacy is one of quiet dedication, technical excellence, and a deep respect for tradition—qualities that are embodied in this beautiful kokeshi doll.
