K15102 - Sosaku Shingata Kokeshi by Yoshio 良雄
This charming shingata kokeshi is a delightful example of postwar creative craftsmanship, signed simply as "良雄" (Yoshio). Unlike traditional kokeshi, which strictly adhere to regional styles, shingata—or “new style”—kokeshi allow for greater artistic freedom, often blending folk tradition with playful or expressive modern design.
Standing modestly in size, this doll features a rounded head with a matte black topknot, reminiscent of a traditional mage hairstyle, stylized almost in the shape of a bow or gourd. The facial expression is soft and serene, with delicate features and a gentle smile, evoking a sense of innocence and tranquility.
The body is decorated with a vivid floral motif, hand-painted in red and green, representing chrysanthemums. The blossoms are dynamically arranged, their elongated petals and curling leaves flowing elegantly along the curve of the doll’s body. The pale wood remains unvarnished, adding to the rustic warmth and tactile appeal of the piece.
Yoshio Sakurai was born on August 16, 1941, in Nametsu, Katta County, Miyagi Prefecture, as the eldest son of farmer Sakurai Genjuro. Around 1960, he moved to Shiroishi, where he spent several years carving new styles of wooden bases before turning his attention to kokeshi. In 1968, he officially began making traditional kokeshi dolls under the guidance of master craftsman Ōba Kamenoshin. With the support of local historian Sugano Shinichi, he became independent in 1970, continuing to craft kokeshi while also working as a farmer. He shared his passion by conducting painting classes and demonstrations at the Miyagi Zao Kokeshi Museum in Togatta, playing a key role in preserving and promoting this beloved folk tradition.
