K15133 - Sosaku Kokeshi by Ōyama Ichikuraji 大山一倉次
This Sōsaku Shingata Kokeshi was crafted by Ōyama Ichikuraji 大山一倉次, a traditional kokeshi artisan active in the region around Minakami Town (水上町), Tone District, Gunma Prefecture. The area lies at the foot of 谷川岳 (Mount Tanigawa), one of the most celebrated peaks of the Japanese Alps, whose dramatic alpine scenery strongly influenced the artist’s work.
Ōyama Ichikuraji is particularly known for his distinctive style often referred to by collectors as “Tanigawadake Landscape Kokeshi”. Rather than decorating the doll with only floral or geometric motifs, he painted mountain landscapes directly onto the body, transforming the kokeshi into a small sculptural canvas that celebrates the natural beauty of the region.
The form follows the Shingata (new-style) kokeshi tradition, with a smoothly turned cylindrical body and a rounded head, maintaining the elegance of traditional kokeshi proportions while allowing greater artistic freedom in decoration. The face is rendered with gentle simplicity—narrow eyes, a small nose, and a subtle mouth—conveying a calm, contemplative expression.
The most distinctive feature of Ōyama’s work is the landscape imagery on the body, often depicting the ridges, forests, and seasonal scenery of Mount Tanigawa. These painted scenes evoke the rugged beauty of the mountains surrounding Minakami, an area long known for its hot springs and dramatic alpine environment. Through this motif, the doll becomes not only a decorative object but also a miniature tribute to the landscape of Gunma’s mountainous region.
