K18086 - Tsuchiyu by Sato Toshiaki 佐藤俊昭
A Tsuchiyu kokeshi is the work of Sato Toshiaki (佐藤俊昭, 1930–2009), a skilled craftsman from Fukushima Prefecture who carried forward the traditional Tsuchiyu lineage. The doll features a characteristic Tsuchiyu silhouette—tall, slender, and gently tapering toward the base with rhythmic horizontal striping that wraps around the body in alternating shades of red and dark brown, evoking a sense of motion and balance.
The face is delicately rendered with a sweet, smiling expression and upward arched eyes. The hair is painted in a sweeping style with red accent bands adorning the sides of the head. This style is emblematic of Tsuchiyu kokeshi aesthetics, where subtlety and simplicity are key to its rustic charm.
Sato Toshiaki was born in Tsuchiyu Onsen and learned the art of kokeshi-making from his father, Sato Ushizo. After working as a railway employee, he returned to the family craft, eventually becoming a well-regarded figure in the Tsuchiyu kokeshi community. His work is noted for its precision in linework and the graceful balance between tradition and personal flair.
