This vintage Donko-style (どんこ型) kokeshi originates from the Tōhoku region, the birthplace of Japan's traditional kokeshi culture. Characterized by its rounded head, slender neck, and gracefully tapered body, the Donko style is admired for its refined simplicity and gentle feminine expression.

The doll features a serene face with delicately arched eyebrows, fine almond-shaped eyes, and a traditional coiffure accented with a subtle pink hair ornament. Its body is decorated in a striking monochrome palette, highlighted by a beautifully hand-painted white chrysanthemum motif set against a deep black background. Fine horizontal lathe rings encircle the body, creating a harmonious contrast that reflects the understated elegance for which Tōhoku kokeshi are celebrated.

Unlike the brightly coloured souvenir dolls produced for tourists, traditional Tōhoku kokeshi embody the quiet beauty of rural craftsmanship. Each piece is individually turned from wood and carefully hand-painted, allowing the natural grain and warmth of the timber to become part of the design. The restrained colour palette and balanced proportions give this doll a timeless, minimalist aesthetic that fits effortlessly into both traditional and contemporary interiors.
