This vintage Yajirō Kokeshi (弥治郎こけし) by Hisashi Niyama (新山久志, 1915–1984), a distinguished traditional kokeshi artisan from Shiroishi, Miyagi Prefecture. Hisashi was the eldest son of the renowned craftsman Sanroku Niyama (新山三六) and learned the techniques of woodturning and kokeshi making directly from his father, continuing an important lineage within the Yajirō tradition.
The decoration is dominated by vivid vermilion red, applied in strong horizontal rings and long vertical bands that contrast beautifully with the warm natural colour of the wood. The upper body features a striking V-shaped design, while the lower section is decorated with elongated red stripes. Together, these geometric elements create a remarkably modern visual rhythm while remaining rooted in the traditional decorative vocabulary of Yajirō kokeshi.
Hisashi Niyama (1915–1984) is remembered for his disciplined craftsmanship, clear and expressive faces, carefully turned forms, and confident use of traditional patterns and strong colours. Working primarily during the mid-20th century, he helped preserve the distinctive identity of the Yajirō school while continuing the craftsmanship inherited from his father.
