A Tsuchiyu-style kokeshi, crafted by Ichiro Abe, stands 18cm tall and carries a strong sense of nostalgic craftsmanship. The doll’s softly rounded head is decorated with a fringe of bold black hair and a red ribbon-like headband, framing expressive, almond-shaped eyes and thin brows, a subtle nod to the Tajiro influence that defined many mid-century Tsuchiyu works.

The body is gracefully tapered and decorated with traditional red and brown wheel-turned bands, a classic motif in Tsuchiyu style. A small red floral accent on the midsection adds a hint of delicate artistry. The slightly rustic finish and warm tones give the doll a timeless character, evoking the spirit of postwar Japanese craftsmanship.

Ichiro Abe was born in Tsuchiyu Onsen, Fukushima Prefecture, on January 8, 1925, into a family of skilled woodworkers. His father, Abe Shinjiro, and uncle Jisuke were both influential figures in the Tsuchiyu kokeshi lineage. Ichiro learned woodworking from his father in the early 1940s, initially making kokeshi before shifting careers during the war in 1943.

He returned to kokeshi-making in January 1955, running a souvenir shop alongside his workshop. Over time, he mentored several younger craftsmen, including Abe Katsuhide and Abe Toshimasa, helping to preserve and transmit Tsuchiyu traditions.

Ichiro’s style evolved with the times, initially reflecting the fusion of Tajiro influences and modern aesthetics typical of the 1950s–60s. However, during the 1960s kokeshi revival, he returned to the study of prewar forms, particularly those of his father. Through meticulous restorations, he honored the Shinjiro legacy, creating works that captured the spirit of early Taisho-era Tsuchiyu dolls.

Although his brushwork could be slightly stiff, his dedication to form and preservation left behind a wealth of expressive, historically grounded kokeshi. He continued producing until his passing on August 6, 2000, at the age of 76.
