K20129 - Traditional Naruko Kokeshi by Chikara Onuma 大沼力
This vintage Naruko kokeshi, crafted by master artisan Chikara Onuma, exemplifies the warmth and charm of the Naruko tradition. Born into a family of woodcarvers in Naruko, Miyagi Prefecture, Chikara Onuma succeeded his father after a family history marked by tragedy and resilience. He began carving in 1945 under his father’s tutelage and spent decades perfecting his style.
This particular kokeshi features the hallmark Naruko characteristics: a rounded head with a high topknot, detailed fringe and sidelocks, and a soft, smiling expression. The cylindrical body gently flares toward the base and is adorned with a lightly brushed red pattern that has aged beautifully over time, giving the doll a soft, almost faded patina that adds to its nostalgic charm.
Chikara's craftsmanship is evident in the balanced proportions and gentle expression, reflecting his long dedication to the traditional craft. Though his hands grew unsteady in later years, his legacy continues through his son Hidenori and the many apprentices he trained, including Katakura Tomio and Kumagai Yaichi.
This piece offers not just folk beauty but a deep connection to one of Naruko’s most influential kokeshi families.
