Born into a family of woodcarvers in Naruko, Miyagi Prefecture, Chikara Onuma succeeded his father after a family history marked by tragedy and resilience. He began carving in 1945 under his father’s tutelage and spent decades perfecting his style.
This particular kokeshi features the hallmark Naruko characteristics: a rounded head with a high topknot, detailed fringe and sidelocks, and a soft, smiling expression.
