K20155 - Sosaku Shingata Kokeshi by Suizan 翠山
This refined Sōsaku Shingata Kokeshi by Suizan (翠山) is a beautiful example of the transitional period between traditional and creative kokeshi craftsmanship. Thoughtfully carved from natural wood, the doll carries a quiet elegance through its balanced proportions, warm aged patina, and minimalist expression.
Suizan is believed to have originated from the Tōhoku region, the historic heartland of kokeshi culture. While little documented information survives about the artist, his works are admired for bridging the world of traditional forms and the emerging sōsaku (creative) movement. Many of his dolls retain visual echoes of classic Tōgatta-style kokeshi, particularly in the rounded head, slender cylindrical body, and restrained decorative approach.
This piece is especially notable for its delicate Harusame-bori (春雨彫) carving technique — literally meaning “spring rain carving.” Fine incised lines are cut directly into the wood surface, creating soft rhythmic textures reminiscent of falling rain. The subtle carved detailing around the hair and body gives the doll a gentle tactile quality while preserving the natural beauty of the wood grain.
The body is further enhanced with an engraved floral motif rendered in understated pyrographic-style lines, adding a quiet decorative accent without overwhelming the simplicity of the form. The serene face, with its softly closed eyes and geometric features, evokes the calm introspective character often associated with early creative kokeshi.
