K25043 - Togatta by Fumio Ogawa 小川文男
A Togatta-style kokeshi is the work of Fumio Ogawa, a contemporary artisan known for bridging tradition and modern craftsmanship. The doll features a classic Togatta form with a slender cylindrical body and a slightly oversized rounded head. The face is delicately hand-painted with expressive eyes and a warm, smiling expression. Red chrysanthemum-like motifs cascade vertically down the body, a traditional floral motif often found in Togatta design. The head is decorated with vivid radial patterns accenting the hairline.
Fumio Ogawa (b. 1950) was born in Watari, Miyagi Prefecture. Initially employed by Tokyo Heavy Industries, his life took a turn after meeting kokeshi craftsman Yuichi Komuro, who inspired his interest in traditional dolls. Ogawa began training in woodcarving around 1973 and became independent in 1978. He later honed his skills under Masahiro Sato (Yajiro lineage) and Tetsuro Sato (Togatta lineage). Ogawa's dedication to the craft also extended to caring for his master Masahiro Sato in his later years. Though he balanced doll-making with other jobs, his kokeshi are appreciated for their faithful adherence to traditional forms and expressive painting. This piece shows noticeabl fading, especially on the head and side of the body. Offered at a special discounted price due to condition.
