K25048 - Shingata by Kaganuma Masayuki 加賀沼勝子
This elegant Sosaku Kokeshi doll is the work of master craftsman Kaganuma Masayuki (加賀沼勝子), born in 1936. Distinguished by its vibrant hand-painted floral motifs, this doll is a beautiful example of the Shingata (新型) or “new style” Kokeshi tradition, an artistic movement that merges the aesthetic sensibilities of traditional Kokeshi with modern expression.
The doll's warm natural woodgrain is gracefully adorned with bold red and dark flower patterns, extending from the head to the lower body. The face is delicately painted with a joyful expression.
Notably, this piece bears an award sticker from the All-Japan Kokeshi Contest (全日本こけしコンクール), signifying that it received the Forestry Agency Director's Award (林野庁長官賞受賞) a prestigious honor that reflects Kaganuma’s exceptional skill and contribution to Japanese craft.
Though it features classic elements reminiscent of traditional Naruko-style Kokeshi, the doll’s proportions and artistic freedom mark it as Shingata—or what some collectors call Imayō (今様) a “modern interpretation” of the classical form. This makes it a wonderful addition for collectors who appreciate the bridge between tradition and innovation in Japanese folk art.
