K25097 - Tsuchiyu Kokeshi by Kazuo Watanabe 渡邊和夫
This is a traditional Tsuchiyu-style kokeshi by Kazuo Watanabe (渡邊和夫), a master craftsman born in 1940 in Tsuchiyu Onsen Town, Fukushima Prefecture. Coming from a distinguished lineage, Kazuo is the eldest son of woodworker Watanabe Ryosaku and the grandson of Hana, daughter of the famed kokeshi maker Sakuma Asanosuke. He proudly carried on the Minatoya tradition, a deeply rooted style in Tsuchiyu’s kokeshi history.
This kokeshi features the classic Tsuchiyu form with a slender, tapering body and a rounded head. The doll’s face is delicately hand-painted with soft, flowing lines, capturing the gentle and serene expression typical of the style. The body is adorned with boldly turned horizontal bands in rich red and green, showcasing Watanabe's confident brushwork and command of color.
Renowned not only for his craftsmanship but also for mentoring the next generation, Watanabe Kazuo’s dolls remain highly sought after for their authenticity and refined Minatoya aesthetic. This piece is a lovely representation of his lifelong dedication to preserving and evolving the Tsuchiyu tradition.
