K25161 - Zao Kokeshi by Ikuo Okazaki 岡崎幾雄
This Zao-style kokeshi by Ikuo Okazaki 岡崎幾雄 (1935–2025) is a refined and expressive example of the Zao lineage, distinguished by its elegant simplicity and confident brushwork.
The body is slender and straight, emphasizing vertical balance. It is decorated with a large, boldly painted red chrysanthemum motif that dominates the front, its petals radiating outward from a softly feathered center. The flower is accompanied by dark, flowing leaves rendered in a few confident strokes, creating a sense of movement and asymmetry. The restrained use of color—primarily red, black, and natural wood—reflects the aesthetic clarity typical of Zao kokeshi.
Ikuo Okazaki’s life and work are deeply rooted in resilience and dedication. Born in Zao Takayu in 1935, he faced early hardship, losing both his father and the opportunity to learn directly from his family’s woodworking tradition. Beginning his apprenticeship at age 15 under Okazaki Naoshi, he developed his craft independently while also managing the family souvenir shop, Notoya. Despite setbacks—including the destruction of his workshop by fire—he continued producing and painting kokeshi, often collaborating with other craftsmen. His works became rare and highly sought after, and he remained an active and influential figure in the kokeshi world well into his later years.
