This warm and beautifully aged Naruko kokeshi by Takishima Shigeru 滝島茂, 1936–2008) reflects the gentle elegance and refined craftsmanship of the traditional Takakan lineage of Naruko.

The doll features a softly rounded head with delicate facial expressions characteristic of Naruko-style kokeshi. Fine arched brows, narrow smiling eyes, and a tiny red mouth create a serene and welcoming expression. The hair is painted with crisp black side locks and short bangs, while subtle red floral accents crown the head with understated charm.

Its cylindrical body is decorated with large hand-painted kiku (chrysanthemum) blossoms rendered in flowing red brushwork with muted green leaves. The floral motifs softly blend into the warm natural wood grain, giving the piece a calm, nostalgic atmosphere. Compared with brighter modern examples, this kokeshi carries a beautifully mellow patina that enhances its vintage character and highlights the natural warmth of the wood.

Takishima Shigeru was born in Miyagi Prefecture in 1936 and began apprenticing under Morio Takahashi of Naruko at the age of sixteen, learning traditional woodturning techniques within the renowned Takakan workshop. After completing his apprenticeship, he worked as a craftsman before temporarily leaving the profession in 1959. Returning to woodworking in 1967 after marrying into the Takishima family, he resumed creating kokeshi dolls and continued producing works in the classic Takakan style for decades. Around 1985, his wife Sayo also began painting kokeshi, making their workshop a small family continuation of the Naruko tradition.

This piece is a lovely representation of Takishima’s work — modest, balanced, and deeply rooted in traditional Naruko aesthetics. Its softened tones and expressive floral painting give it a particularly tranquil presence, making it an appealing addition for collectors of vintage kokeshi and regional Japanese folk art.
