K30055 - Sosaku Kokeshi by Sasaki Katsumi 佐々木克巳
This elegant Sōsaku Kokeshi was created by Sasaki Katsumi (佐々木克巳, 1928–2008), a respected craftsman from Shiroishi City in Miyagi Prefecture whose work bridges the worlds of traditional and creative kokeshi. After studying woodworking and painting under Yoshisuke Wagatsuma, a master of the Togatta tradition, Sasaki developed his own artistic voice and became independent in 1954, creating Shingata and Sōsaku kokeshi that moved beyond conventional regional forms while retaining the spirit of traditional craftsmanship.
This piece beautifully demonstrates Sasaki’s distinctive aesthetic. The doll features a large rounded head balanced atop a geometric cylindrical body, creating a strikingly modern silhouette. The face is rendered with remarkable restraint: closed eyes drawn in his characteristic delicate style, a tiny red mouth, and softly brushed hair evoke a sense of quiet contemplation and gentle innocence. This understated expression reflects the artist’s celebrated ability to convey emotion through the simplest of lines.
Works such as this embody the spirit of postwar creative kokeshi, when artists sought new avenues of expression while preserving the warmth and humanity that define the tradition. The doll’s architectural composition and serene presence make it feel almost sculptural, standing comfortably between folk craft and modern design.
Today, Sasaki Katsumi’s legacy continues through the Sasaki Kokeshi Workshop in Shiroishi, where his son Isao Sasaki and daughter-in-law Miho Sasaki carry on the family tradition. This piece remains a charming example of Katsumi’s mature style—simple, thoughtful, and quietly expressive, capturing the enduring appeal of Japanese creative kokeshi art.
