A striking vintage Yajirō Kokeshi by Sakyo Niyama 新山左京, a craftsman closely associated with the Yajirō tradition of Miyagi Prefecture.

This piece has a particularly elegant and imposing silhouette, with a large rounded head set above a long, slender cylindrical body. The face is painted with fine arched brows, narrow eyes, a delicate nose, and a small red mouth, creating a calm and slightly dignified expression. Bold black hair is combined with vivid red decoration around the sides of the head, while the dark cap-like crown gives the doll a strong graphic presence.

The body is more restrained, decorated with crisp red horizontal bands around the upper section and long red brushstrokes near the base. This contrast between the elaborate head painting and the comparatively minimal body is very effective, allowing the natural grain of the wood to remain visible.

Sakyo Niyama was born in Fukushima Prefecture and grew up during a period marked by wartime movement and upheaval. In the late 1940s, he began learning kokeshi making from his father, Sanai Niyama, developing the woodturning and painting techniques associated with the Yajirō lineage. In 1957, he established his own kokeshi shop at the entrance to Yajirō, continuing the family tradition while developing his own recognizable hand.

The Yajirō tradition, centered around the Yajirō district near Shiroishi in Miyagi Prefecture, is especially known for its precise lathe work, strong red-and-black decoration, and bold ring patterns. This example reflects those qualities beautifully while retaining the individual personality of Niyama’s brushwork.
