KR10 - Kabuto Kazari by Ryūgyoku 龍玉
A beautifully crafted Japanese Kabuto Kazari (兜飾り), a traditional decorative samurai helmet created by Ryūgyoku (龍玉), a Japanese maker of traditional festival dolls and ornaments. This impressive piece represents an Ōkuwa-gata Hoshi Kabuto (大鍬形星兜), distinguished by its large, sweeping golden kuwagata (horn-shaped crests) and elaborate central dragon ornament.
The helmet features richly decorated protective side panels, intricate gold-tone metalwork, and traditional braided cords, reflecting the elegance and symbolism of Japanese samurai armour. The helmet rests on a deep purple fabric cushion, accompanied by an orange decorative tassel, and is presented on a black lacquer-style display stand embellished with golden fittings. A wooden maker's plaque bearing the inscription 龍玉作 (Made by Ryūgyoku) accompanies the piece.
In Japan, ornamental samurai helmets are traditionally displayed during Tango no Sekku (端午の節句), celebrated on May 5th, now known as Children's Day (Kodomo no Hi). These displays, collectively known as Gogatsu Ningyō (五月人形) or May Dolls, symbolise courage, strength, protection, and the hope that children will grow up healthy and resilient. The samurai helmet represents the protective spirit of Japanese warriors, while the majestic dragon motif is traditionally associated with power, wisdom, and good fortune.
