K10053 - Sōsaku Kokeshi “First Star” (一番星) by Suzuki
This charming pair of Sōsaku Kokeshi, titled “Ichibanboshi” (一番星) or “First Star,” represents a nostalgic vision of innocence and wonder, as if two children gaze skyward to spot the first evening star. Created by Suzuki, these kokeshi are a poetic reflection of post-war Japan’s optimism and its search for beauty in simplicity.
Each figure is hand-turned from natural wood, then delicately hand-painted in soft, earthy tones with distinctive geometric kimono designs — one in blue and yellow, the other in warm ochre and purple. Their expressions are serene and minimalist, with upward gazes that evoke purity and childlike hope.
This award-winning design earned second place at the All Japan Kokeshi Competition (全国こけしコンクール第二位受賞) held in Sendai in 1951 (Shōwa 26). The name “First Star” beautifully captures the sense of wonder that defines Suzuki’s artistic philosophy — blending folk simplicity with deep emotional resonance.
