SHP173 - Nishijin-ori Shikishi Artwork Kabuto 兜

This shikishi artwork presents a beautifully detailed samurai helmet (兜, kabuto) — a traditional symbol of strength, protection, and courage — meticulously crafted from luxurious Nishijin-ori (西陣織) fabric. Set against a shimmering gold background, the kabuto features richly woven brocade in vivid red and gold, accented with silver trims and fine cord details that convey both refinement and power.

Behind the helmet, green irises (菖蒲) are subtly painted — a motif deeply tied to 端午の節句 (Tango no Sekku), also known as こどもの日 (Children’s Day), celebrated on May 5th. During this festival, families display kabuto and warrior dolls to wish for their children’s health, strength, and courage. The iris leaves, believed to ward off evil, add an auspicious touch to the composition.

Rendered with the shimmering texture of Nishijin weaving and a refined aesthetic balance, this piece embodies the noble spirit of the samurai and the warm hope for a child’s bright future. A timeless celebration of Japanese craftsmanship and seasonal tradition, this shikishi is both a work of art and a heartfelt talisman for growth and protection.
