SHP189 - Shikishi Art Kabuto by Saitō Sō 斉藤宗
This shikishi artwork by Saitō Sō (斉藤宗) features a woven depiction of a samurai helmet (kabuto), a powerful emblem of strength, honor, and protection. Created using Nishijin Ayakinori (西陣綾錦織) a refined Kyoto textile weaving technique, the piece shimmers with intricate brocade patterns and luminous metallic threads that bring depth and vitality to the composition.
The kabuto rests before a cluster of purple irises (shōbu), flowers traditionally associated with Tango no Sekku (端午の節句), the Boys’ Festival celebrated on May 5th. The iris, symbolizing courage and purity, complements the kabuto’s martial grace, together invoking wishes for good health, bravery, and prosperity for the next generation.
Saitō Sō is a Japanese painter and textile artist from Kagawa Prefecture, known for his refined works that blend traditional motifs with modern artistic expression. He graduated from the Kyoto City University of Arts (京都市立芸術大学), where he completed specialized studies in fine art.
His works often appear on Nishijin-ori (西陣織) textile art pieces, combining the elegance of woven brocade with painterly sensitivity — as seen in his kabuto shikishi, which celebrates the valor and aesthetics of Japan’s classical culture.
