This shikishi artwork is a refined reinterpretation inspired by the iconic Kabuki image of Utagawa Toyokuni III (also known as Utagawa Kunisada) depicting Ichikawa Danjuro VII 七代目 市川 團十郎 in his celebrated role Shibaraku 暫, originally created around c. 1820.

The composition focuses on Danjuro’s unmistakable backward-turned stance, a dramatic hallmark of the Shibaraku role. Rendered within a circular format, the figure’s powerful presence is distilled into bold planes of color and pattern rather than detailed facial expression. The rich brown costume, accented with sharp white geometric motifs and flashes of green and red textile detail, immediately evokes the aragoto (rough style) of Kabuki—heroic, commanding, and larger than life. The tall, upright prop held behind the figure reinforces the sense of restrained power just before explosive action.

Unlike the original ukiyo-e prints, which emphasize theatrical facial makeup (kumadori) and frontal confrontation, this shikishi adopts a subtle, contemplative viewpoint, allowing the viewer to feel the weight and dignity of the actor’s presence from behind. The softly textured background and restrained palette lend the work a painterly calm, transforming a moment of theatrical bravado into an image of quiet intensity.
