SHP257 - Kyoto Shikishi Print by Seibu Bunjō 西部文淨

SHP257 - Kyoto Shikishi Print by Seibu Bunjō 西部文淨

This refined rabbit shikishi print combines expressive Zen calligraphy with gentle ink painting, creating a work filled with warmth and auspicious meaning.

Two softly rendered rabbits stand upright facing one another, their small forepaws lifted as if in quiet conversation or shared anticipation. The figures are painted in delicate gradations of sumi ink, with subtle shading that gives their rounded forms a tender liveliness. Fine, economical lines define their ears, whiskers, and expressions. Sparse tufts of grass anchor them gently to the ground, while a faint circular wash behind suggests the full moon. The moon rabbit (月の兎) represents harmony, longevity, devotion, and selfless effort, making the pairing especially auspicious.

The work is signed by Seibu Bunjō 西部文淨, a respected monk associated with Tōfuku-ji (東福寺) in Kyoto, one of the principal temples of the Rinzai Zen school. His signature and red seals authenticate the piece and reflect the Zen tradition of integrating calligraphy and painting as direct expressions of cultivated mind and spirit.

In Japanese symbolism, rabbits also signify prosperity, agility, and forward movement—qualities associated with new beginnings and hope. Together with the inscription, the composition conveys a heartfelt wish for dreams fulfilled, harmony in relationships, and a gentle, auspicious future.
