SHP264 - Shikishi Print of Yokoyama Taikan 横山大観

This shikishi print after Yokoyama Taikan (横山大観, 1868–1958) captures the majestic stillness of Mount Fuji rising above a sea of drifting clouds. Produced by the renowned Ōtsuka Kōgeisha (大塚巧藝社), the work reflects both Taikan’s lyrical vision of landscape and the studio’s mission to make fine art accessible to a wider public.

Mount Fuji emerges in quiet grandeur, its snow-covered peak rendered in soft tonal gradations of white and pale ink. Dark, vertical accents articulate the rugged volcanic ridges, creating contrast against the mist-laden slopes.

This print was issued by Ōtsuka Kōgeisha, founded in 1919 by Minoru Ōtsuka under the ideal of “art for the people.” Originally a photography studio, the company became a pioneering producer of kōgei-ga (巧藝画), high-quality art reproductions created in close collaboration with master artists such as Taikan. Their partnership helped disseminate celebrated Nihonga works to a broader audience while maintaining remarkable fidelity to the originals.

Mount Fuji, a symbol of spiritual elevation, endurance, and national identity, has long been a favored subject in Japanese art. In Taikan’s interpretation, it appears not as a dramatic spectacle but as a serene and timeless presence—an embodiment of quiet strength rising above the shifting world below.
