SHP266 - Shikishi print of Takeuchi Seihō 竹内栖鳳

This refined shikishi print titled 『喜雀図』 (Kijaku-zu, “Auspicious Sparrows”) after Takeuchi Seihō 竹内栖鳳 (1864–1942) captures the quiet charm and subtle vitality that characterize the master’s celebrated bird paintings.

This print was issued by Ōtsuka Kōgeisha, founded in 1919 by Minoru Ōtsuka under the ideal of “art for the people.” Originally a photography studio, the company became a pioneering producer of kōgei-ga (巧藝画), high-quality art reproductions created in close collaboration with master artists such as Taikan. Their partnership helped disseminate celebrated Nihonga works to a broader audience while maintaining remarkable fidelity to the originals.

The title “喜雀” carries auspicious connotations: sparrows (雀) are often associated with liveliness and happiness, and the character 喜 (“joy” or “auspicious happiness”) reinforces the work’s positive symbolism. In traditional Japanese painting, small birds frequently represent everyday beauty, seasonal change, and gentle prosperity.

Takeuchi Seihō, a leading figure of modern Nihonga, was renowned for synthesizing traditional Japanese techniques with observational realism influenced by Western art. His animal and bird subjects are particularly admired for their natural vitality and sensitive rendering. Even in reproduction, this shikishi print preserves the lyrical balance, soft atmospheric space, and understated elegance that define Seihō’s style.
