SHP279 - Shikishi Print of Kawai Gyokudō 川合玉堂

This shikishi print presents a dynamic rural landscape inspired by the work of 川合玉堂 (Kawai Gyokudō, 1873–1957), one of the most celebrated painters of modern Nihonga (Japanese-style painting). Known for his lyrical depictions of nature and rural life, Gyokudō often portrayed the harmony between people and the natural world, capturing everyday scenes with poetic sensitivity.

The composition shows two travelers carefully crossing a narrow wooden plank bridge suspended above a rushing mountain stream. One figure cautiously balances with a pole, while another waits further along the path near a small shelter. Towering above them is a massive rock formation that looms dramatically over the gorge, rendered in bold, sweeping ink strokes. The contrast between the monumental rock and the tiny human figures emphasizes both the grandeur of nature and the humility of human presence within it.

The artist’s brushwork combines expressive ink washes with delicate touches of color, creating a sense of movement in the water and atmosphere in the surrounding landscape. Gyokudō’s style is particularly evident in the balance between spontaneity and careful observation—broad ink gestures suggest the rugged cliffs and flowing water, while fine details bring life to the figures and the fragile wooden bridge.

This shikishi print was issued by Ōtsuka Kōgeisha (大塚巧藝社), a renowned Kyoto-based publisher founded in 1919 by Minoru Ōtsuka under the guiding principle of “art for the people.” Originally established as a photography studio, the company developed into a pioneering producer of kōgei-ga (巧藝画)—high-quality art reproductions created through meticulous processes designed to faithfully capture the spirit and brushwork of original paintings. Ōtsuka Kōgeisha collaborated with many leading artists of the time, helping make fine Japanese art accessible to a wider audience.
