This shikishi print depicts Sarumawashi 猿回し, the traditional Japanese street performance in which a trained monkey entertains spectators under the guidance of its handler. The work is based on a painting by Takeuchi Seihō 竹内栖鳳 (1864–1942), one of the most influential masters of modern Nihonga painting and a central figure in the Kyoto art world.

Rendered with remarkable economy of brushwork, the composition centers on a small performing monkey captured mid-motion. The animal balances upright while holding a thin rod across its shoulders, evoking the lively gestures of a trained performer. The monkey wears a brightly colored vest of green and red with a blue head covering, details that stand out vividly against the soft, textured background of the shikishi board. A thin tether trails behind the figure, subtly suggesting the unseen trainer and the traditional performance setting.

Seihō’s style is evident in the expressive ink strokes and the naturalistic yet playful portrayal of the animal. Known for his deep observation of living creatures, the artist often studied animals closely and rendered them with a combination of spontaneity and precision. Here, the minimal composition emphasizes movement and character, capturing the humor and vitality of the monkey with only a few deft brushstrokes.

This shikishi print was issued by Ōtsuka Kōgeisha (大塚巧藝社), a Kyoto-based publisher founded in 1919 by Minoru Ōtsuka under the ideal of “art for the people.” Originally established as a photography studio, the company became a pioneering producer of kōgei-ga (巧藝画)—high-quality art reproductions created through sophisticated techniques designed to faithfully preserve the brushwork and spirit of original paintings. Working closely with prominent artists and estates, Ōtsuka Kōgeisha helped bring fine Japanese art into everyday homes and collections.
