SHP281 - Shikishi Print of Kawai Gyokudō 川合玉堂
This serene shikishi print, Early Spring 早春 is based on a work by Kawai Gyokudō 川合玉堂 , 1873–1957, a master of modern Nihonga painting renowned for his poetic depictions of rural landscapes and seasonal transitions.
The composition captures a quiet countryside scene awakening from winter. In the foreground, a gently sloping embankment is dotted with fresh green shoots, while a narrow stream winds softly through the terrain. A flowering tree, delicately touched with small blossoms in pale white and soft red, signals the arrival of spring. Behind it rise dark, towering evergreens rendered in rich, textured ink washes, their dense forms contrasting with the lightness of the blossoms.
Further in the distance, traditional thatched-roof houses nestle among cultivated fields, their orderly patterns suggesting the rhythms of agrarian life. The faint outline of mountains recedes into a misty horizon, creating a sense of depth and quiet atmosphere. Gyokudō’s characteristic brushwork—at once expressive and controlled—imbues the scene with both structure and spontaneity, capturing the subtle shift from winter stillness to early spring vitality.
The restrained palette, with its soft earth tones and touches of green and blossom color, enhances the contemplative mood. Rather than dramatizing the season, the artist conveys its presence through nuance: the first blooms, the thawing land, and the quiet continuity of village life.
This shikishi print was issued by Ōtsuka Kōgeisha (大塚巧藝社), a Kyoto-based publisher founded in 1919 by Minoru Ōtsuka under the guiding principle of “art for the people.” Originally a photography studio, the company became a pioneering producer of kōgei-ga (巧藝画)—refined art reproductions that faithfully capture the brushwork and spirit of original paintings through close collaboration with leading artists.
