SHP297 - Shikishi artwork from Kōyasan 高野山
This shikishi calligraphy artwork features the powerful Zen phrase 「佛心」 (Busshin – “Buddha Mind” or “Enlightened Heart”), rendered in bold, expressive brushwork. The work is attributed to a 管長 (Kanchō, Head Priest) of Kōyasan 高野山, the sacred mountain center of Shingon Buddhism founded by Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi), one of Japan’s most important religious sites.
Executed in rich black ink on a traditional shikishi board, the composition is minimalist yet deeply impactful. The large central characters are written with confident, sweeping strokes, embodying both strength and spiritual clarity. The surrounding inscription and red seals (hanko) further enhance its authenticity and ceremonial presence.
The phrase “佛心” carries profound meaning in Buddhist philosophy, referring to the innate enlightened nature within all beings—the pure, compassionate mind that transcends ego and illusion. Such calligraphy is often created as a form of spiritual expression, meditation, and teaching, making it both an artwork and a contemplative object.
This piece is ideal for display in a tokonoma alcove, tea room, or meditation space, where its quiet yet commanding presence can be fully appreciated.
