SHP313 - Shikishi Print by Miyamoto Seikō 宮本聖香
This vintage Japanese shikishi print by Miyamoto Seika 宮本聖香 depicts Minamoto no Yoshiie 源義家, one of the most celebrated warrior-generals of the late Heian period. Also known as Hachimantarō Yoshiie 八幡太郎義家, he became a legendary figure in samurai history, admired for his military skill, courage, and refined warrior spirit.
The artwork presents Yoshiie seated in full armor, holding a long bow and arrows. His vivid red armor plates, ornate helmet, and elegant warrior costume are rendered with fine decorative detail, giving the piece both strength and grace. The composition captures the dignity of a noble Heian-period commander, combining historical subject matter with the refined beauty often found in Japanese traditional prints.
Minamoto no Yoshiie was an important ancestor of the later Minamoto warrior lineage, and his reputation helped shape the ideal image of the early samurai: brave, disciplined, loyal, and cultured. His association with Hachiman, the deity of warriors, further strengthened his symbolic meaning as a protector and heroic military figure.
Printed on traditional shikishi board, this piece has a soft gold border that frames the image beautifully. Shikishi artworks were often made for display, collection, or seasonal decoration, and this example would be especially suitable for collectors of Japanese warrior imagery, samurai history, historical prints, or vintage Japanese decorative art.
