SHP315 - Shikishi artwork of Shōki 鍾馗
This vintage Japanese shikishi artwork depicts Shōki 鍾馗, the legendary demon-queller and protector against evil spirits. Shōki is a popular auspicious figure in Japanese art, especially associated with protection, courage, and the warding off of illness or misfortune.
The figure is shown in a dynamic yet restrained composition, dressed in flowing white robes with deep blue accents. His stern expression, long black beard, official-style hat, and sword-like weapon immediately identify him as Shōki, the fierce guardian who chases away demons. The artist uses fine brush lines and soft washes of color to give the figure movement and character, while leaving generous blank space around him in the elegant style of traditional Japanese painting.
In Japanese homes, images of Shōki were often displayed as protective talismans, particularly during Tango no Sekku 端午の節句 or Boys’ Day, when families wished for children’s strength, health, and bravery. His image carries both decorative and symbolic value, making this piece meaningful as well as visually striking.
The artwork is presented on traditional shikishi board, framed with a subtle gold border. The artist’s signature and red seal appear on the lower right, adding to its collectible charm. With its simple palette, expressive brushwork, and powerful protective subject, this shikishi is a beautiful example of Japanese folk-inspired decorative art.
