SHP418 - Shikishi Artwork Chigiri-e ちぎり絵
A refined Japanese shikishi artwork created in the traditional chigiri-e (ちぎり絵) technique, depicting a minimalist bamboo motif and signed Yuki.
The composition is strikingly simple: a tall green bamboo stalk dominates the right side of the shikishi, while a few slender leaves extend outward in deep green and warm yellow. The large areas of empty space give the work a calm, modern quality, while the torn-paper texture adds warmth and a distinctly handmade character.
Bamboo (竹 / take) is an important auspicious motif associated with:
resilience and strength, flexibility, growth and vitality, integrity and perseverance
Because bamboo bends without breaking and continues to grow rapidly, it has long been admired as a symbol of inner strength and the ability to endure changing circumstances.
Chigiri-e literally means “torn-paper picture.” Instead of cutting the paper, the artist tears pieces of washi by hand and layers them to create color, shape, and texture.
In this piece, the slightly fibrous edges of the bamboo stalk contrast beautifully with the cleaner painted outlines and leaves, creating a balanced combination of paper craft and graphic design.
