K10061 - Sosaku by Aoki Ryoka 青木蓼華

Aoki Ryoka (青木蓼華), born in 1931 in Shikishima Village, Gunma Prefecture, Japan, is a distinguished Sosaku Kokeshi artist. Her birth name is Toshiko; she adopted the artist name “Ryoka,” incorporating “Ryo” from her mentor, Japanese-style painter Ryoshu Nozawa. 

Beginning her kokeshi-making journey in 1958, Aoki Ryoka has received multiple accolades for her work, including the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award. In recognition of her dedication and excellence in her craft, she was honored with the Japanese Yellow Ribbon Medal of Honor. 

Her kokeshi dolls are celebrated for their elegant designs, often featuring delicate facial expressions and finely carved forms. Common themes include seasonal motifs and floral patterns, reflecting traditional Japanese aesthetics. Notably, in 1975 and 1983, eight of her pieces were acquired by the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Japan. 

As of 2022, Aoki Ryoka remains active in her craft at the age of 91, continuing to contribute to the art of Sosaku Kokeshi with her unique blend of tradition and creativity.
