K40001 - Sosaku by Sato Suigai 佐藤翠崕

Large size, perfect condition soaku kokeshi by Sato Suigai 佐藤翠崕. He was a renowned kokeshi artisan known for his exquisite craftsmanship and unique artistic style. Active during the mid-to-late 20th century, he specialized in the Sosaku Kokeshi (creative kokeshi) tradition, which allowed for more artistic freedom compared to traditional regional styles. He also pursued careers in fashion design, engineering, and mechanics. His dolls are characterized by elegant, elongated forms, delicate hand-painted details, and a refined sense of balance between simplicity and artistic expression.

Suigai’s kokeshi often feature serene facial expressions, intricate kimono patterns, and subtle color palettes, reflecting a deep appreciation for Japanese aesthetics. His work is highly regarded by collectors for its craftsmanship and distinctive signature, which he often inscribed on the base of his dolls.

His Kokeshi dolls have won many awards, including the Prime Minister's Award in 1966. In 1970, Sato-san's artistry was recognized by Japan's Imperial Family, Crown Prince Akihito, (Now Emperor Akihito), the Minister of Economy and Trade, and the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry.
