TB134 - Hagi-yaki Large Bowl - Banseki Kiln 萩焼 大鉢

TB134 - Hagi-yaki Large Bowl - Banseki Kiln 萩焼 大鉢

Vintage item, never used. This large Hagi-yaki (萩焼) bowl was crafted by the Zuizan Banseki Kiln (瑞雲山 盤石窯), a renowned kiln in Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, known for preserving the refined traditions of Hagi ware while producing works of exceptional quality and tranquility.

The bowl features a serene celadon-grey glaze (ao-hagi) with soft natural gradations and a gentle luster. Subtle horizontal striations from the wheel-throwing process are visible beneath the glaze, emphasizing the artisan’s craftsmanship. The inner surface reveals a smooth, glass-like finish, while the exterior gently transitions to an unglazed base of warm, natural clay — a hallmark of authentic Hagi ware.

Presented in its original kiribako (桐箱, paulownia wood box) inscribed with “Hagi-yaki – Zuizan Banseki-gama” (萩焼 瑞雲山 盤石窯) and accompanied by the kiln’s certificate and documentation, this piece represents both artistic refinement and the spirit of Japanese tea culture.

Hagi-yaki has long been favored by tea masters for its soft clay body, subtle glazes, and the way it evolves over time through use. The glaze gradually absorbs tea, deepening in tone — a transformation known as Hagi no Nanabake (萩の七化け), or “Hagi’s seven transformations.”
