TB136 - Satsuma-yaki Chawan Matcha Bowl 薩摩焼
This Satsuma-yaki (薩摩焼) chawan was crafted by Katsuragi Tōgei of Tōhaku-gama (桃伯窯), a kiln known for its warm, earthy glazes and refined balance between tradition and modern sensibility. Satsuma ware, originating from Kagoshima in southern Japan, is celebrated for its rich clay body, naturalistic glazes, and deep connection to the aesthetics of wabi-sabi.
This bowl showcases a beautiful contrast of layered glazes: The upper section is coated in a warm caramel-brown, softly textured with speckling typical of Satsuma stoneware.
Satsuma ware has a history stretching back over 400 years, originating around the Keichō era (late 16th–early 17th century) when Korean potters brought their techniques to Japan under the patronage of the Shimazu clan. Over centuries, various kilns developed their own expressions, forming what is now recognized as the distinctive traditions of Satsuma-yaki.
The silhouette is graceful, with a gently curved body and slightly raised foot, making it comfortable to hold and ideal for whisking matcha. Subtle variations in color and texture give this chawan an organic charm, embodying the handcrafted spirit for which Satsuma-yaki is admired.
The bowl comes in its signed wooden tomobako (共箱), inscribed with 茶碗 (chawan) and sealed with the artist’s kiln mark, confirming its authenticity.
