TB149 - Tea Cup Set of of Tobe-yaki 砥部焼

Never used. This set of tea cups is a fine example of Tobe-yaki (砥部焼) from Nankō-gama (南光窯), created by the respected potter Yoneda Nankō (米田南光), a ceramic artist closely associated with the modern development of Tobe ware in Ehime Prefecture.

The cups are formed in a softly tapered shape, comfortable in the hand and well suited for daily tea drinking. Their surfaces are finished in a clear, luminous white glaze characteristic of high-quality Tobe-yaki, known for its durability and gentle warmth. Painted on the exterior are delicate four-leaf clover motifs, rendered in calm shades of green with small accent dots in blue and soft pink. The brushwork is light and confident, giving the design a cheerful yet refined presence.

In Japanese symbolism, the four-leaf clover is associated with good fortune, happiness, and harmony, making this set especially appropriate as a gift or for shared moments of tea. The motif balances well with the understated elegance of the porcelain body, allowing the decoration to feel playful without overwhelming the form.

The set is accompanied by its original wooden tomobako, inscribed with the kiln name 南光窯 and identifying it as Tobe ware. Also included is a detailed biography sheet documenting Yoneda Nankō’s career, exhibitions, and achievements, which underscores his contribution to regional ceramic culture and the artistic standing of this work.

Altogether, this tea cup set embodies the spirit of Tobe-yaki: practical yet graceful, sturdy yet gentle in expression. It is a thoughtful blend of everyday usability, auspicious symbolism, and the quiet craftsmanship of a seasoned potter, well suited for both collection and daily enjoyment.
