TB167 - Kazuwa-yaki vase made by 辰三郎 上神焼

This Kazuwa-yaki (上神焼) vase is a work by Tatsusaburō 辰三郎, representing the traditional Japanese pottery style from Kurayoshi in Tottori Prefecture. It is a lesser-known local ceramic tradition distinct from major national kilns but appreciated in regional craft circles.

The vase features a tall, gently tapering form with pronounced horizontal ribbing encircling the body, giving it a strong architectural presence. It is finished in a soft, natural ash-based glaze, blending muted tones of pale gray, beige, and faint blue. The glaze pools subtly in the carved grooves, emphasizing the rhythmic texture and revealing the hand of the potter through natural variations in color and thickness.

Unlike more decorative kiln traditions, Kazuwa-yaki is valued for its earthy simplicity and material honesty, and this piece reflects that philosophy well. The surface bears quiet kiln effects and subtle irregularities that speak to traditional wood-firing and the unpredictability of natural glazes. The overall impression is calm, grounded, and contemplative.

A fine example of regional Japanese pottery, this vase by 辰三郎 will appeal to collectors who appreciate folk-influenced ceramics, natural glazes, and the quiet beauty of lesser-known kiln traditions within Japanese ceramic history. The vase comes with its wooden tomobako box but the lid is missing.
