TB182 - Temple Tea Cup Fudō Myōō 聖天寺
This distinctive Japanese yunomi tea cup originates from Shōtendōji (聖天寺) and features powerful Buddhist imagery and scripture, making it both a functional tea vessel and a devotional object.
The exterior is decorated with vertical inscriptions of the Heart Sutra (般若心経, Hannya Shingyō), one of the most revered texts in Mahayana Buddhism, symbolizing wisdom, emptiness, and enlightenment. At the center appears Fudō Myōō (不動明王)—the Immovable Wisdom King—depicted surrounded by flames, holding a sword and rope. He represents unwavering resolve, protection from evil, and the cutting away of ignorance.
The cup’s design includes a fascinating interactive element:
The appearance before and after hot tea is poured. As the cup warms, the image of Fudō Myōō emerges more vividly, adding a ritual-like, meditative quality to the act of drinking tea.
Finished in a striking contrast of glossy white porcelain and a deep, dark ground for the calligraphy, this cup balances solemnity with everyday practicality. It would traditionally be purchased as a temple souvenir (お守り的湯呑), offering spiritual comfort and protection in daily life.
