TB253 - Kyōgawara Temple Tile from Shōgaku-ji 正覚寺
This striking Kyōgawara (京瓦) decorative tile features the elegant “Sasa Rindō” (笹竜胆紋) crest, a traditional Japanese kamon combining bamboo grass (sasa) and gentian (rindō) motifs. The design conveys both strength and refinement—qualities long associated with samurai lineage and noble families.
Crafted in Kyoto using traditional roof tile techniques, this piece carries the quiet dignity of temple architecture. The reverse bears an inscription indicating its origin from Shōgaku-ji (正覚寺) and dates to Heisei 13 (2001), adding historical and cultural context to the object.
The Sasa Rindō crest is particularly associated with the prestigious Minamoto clan, symbolizing resilience, purity, and enduring lineage. The composition of layered leaves and stylized blossoms creates a harmonious balance, making this tile not only a cultural artifact but also a sculptural decorative piece.
With its subdued grey tone and natural patina, the tile embodies the aesthetic of wabi-sabi, highlighting the beauty of simplicity and age. It can be displayed as a wall piece or on a stand, offering a refined accent for interiors inspired by Japanese tradition.
